The Big Letdown!!

So I tell Heather I wanted to surprise the boys with one of our Christmas traditions (that we didnt really do last year) since Adam is older it should be more fun. I picked up Jake and Heather gets Adam and when we are all home I tell them we are going out and we have a BIG SURPRISE. Jake says "are we going to the movies?!...no..."are we going bowling?!...no..."where are we going?!....We're going to see CHRISTMAS LIGHTS!....."oh"..SO they aren't as enthusiastic as we hoped...Anyway we get in the van and start driving (the back way through Whites CHapel) to Trussville, and start pointing out lights and decoration..15 minutes later Jake is snoring ....we start riding through some neighborhoods and showing Adam...he's humoring me "that's pretty...look at Santa...nothing special. About 20 minutes later we start to leave a subdivision and Adam asks if we are leaving we tell him yes...The kid CLAPS!...Heather and I look at each other like, what? Then he says "yeah, that wasn't very much fun"....Heather and I start laughing, because is was just so nonchalant the way he said it.................what is wrong with my children? This is one of my (and Heather's) favorite things to do as kids...So now Dad is lame...I've got to come up with something MUCH better to get over the downhill slide I'm on...

HAHAHAHAHA!!!! I laughed outloud at this post, and the fact that you have cousin Eddie in his BATHROBE, on your page. That combined with Crazy Train just cracked me up. I know you were hoping that you had a few more years before your kids thought you were uncool, sorry! You'll think of something to redeem yourself, I'm sure. Yeah, I feel you and Heather's pain...I'm the only one in my family that loves looking at the Christmas lights. I suggested to Brian lets do that one night. He just looked at me like, uh, let's not. So I'm the big dork in this house. Man, it's cold in here!

So, so funny! I can picture the whole scene! Yeah, my kids aren't that impressed either. We try to do it every year and they tolerate it but are by no means excited! What's up with that? We grew up in a simpler time I guess!(Man, I just felt really old saying that!) My kids are going tonight with their grandparents to look at lights. Ha! I'll let them have their own letdown! BTW, the pic of cousin Eddie is priceless!

Yay! Three uncool people looking at Christmas lights! And since you called me a dork, I will call you OLD.

I don't know why they haven't played Christmas Vacation yet? We have the DVD if you need a fix.

I think the key is doing it every year. That way the boredom lasts forever and your kids remember it as a tradition. When I was a kid, we would always go after our Christmas Eve service and then go get a Frosty and french fries from Wendy's. I don't remember it being boring, I remember the Frosty. When we go now, somehow we always think that Mountain Brook is the best place to go to look at lights, forgetting the large population of Jewish people in Mtn Brook. Seriously, we've done it three times at least. Downtown Mtn Brook is gorgeous, though. They line all the tree branches in the square with Christmas lights and it's very pretty. And then there's Zoolight Safari. That's pretty cool.

Yeah but you'll be uncool and a dork!

We've gone looking at Christmas lights twice already. My kids love it. We rate the different yards and discuss how santa is really satan... oh, did I say that outloud? :o)

Last night, just as we pull up to one spectacular yard, they unplugged it. The kids were disappointed until Ty pointed out how it looked like the snowmen were melting... or dead. Nothing like death to make it more interesting.

Yeah I'm not a big fan of the inflatable decorations...I like the cheap plastic ones my Dad use to put out when I was a kid....and the big (golfball size) multicolor Christmas lights..

Matt, hate to have screwed up your tradition. (If I'd only known) They were probably bored because we already took them. They loved it. The trick is that you don't go out "to look at lights". On your way home or somewhere you take various routes that you know will take you by the best displays. (The tackier, the better.) Keep it casual. They loved them all but Adam's favorite?...the cement plant at night! "Wow, look at all those lights! Aren't they pretty?"

Uh Crissy, getting a little macabre? How's Uncle Fester?
