Random Thoughts

It has been very slow and boring at work today...that and alot of time in the woods this weekend gave me plenty of time to reflect...

-I love Turkey (or chicken) & dressing...any time of the year
-I enjoy hunting even if I don't harvest anything...just being in the woods is relaxing
-I enjoy sitting on the back porch and cooking on the grill more than you can imagine
-I'm noticing that the bandwagon is overflowing (not a dig at AL fans at all)
-I can't stand men who don't act like men ...I'm a little old school
-I want a motorcycle to ride with Jake...or 4 wheeler (could use it for hunting)
-I can't stand grown women that act like girls and use silly words like a girl and pout..drives me nuts..
-I can't stand parents that sit in the pick up line for 10 minutes getting there babies in the car at school!!! Have to get out and hug them and help them in the car etc...and the kids 12!!! Let em grow up
-I enjoy watching a good fight (MMA) gets me going
-I'd love to have a cabin in the woods to spend time with the family...
- I would love to have some homemade Banana Pudding with the Meringue on top...
--I wish I had more time to spend one on one with the boys

Rated R-Rublicans In Hollywood

With all the celebrities jumping on TV and telling us what we should think and why we are all just terrible people if we can't see how wonderful and awe inspiring Barrack Hussein Obama is I thought I'd explore the other side of Hollywood that no one talks about. The Right Side. It's almost a death sentence in Hollywood if you openly proclaim that you are a Republican or a COnservative. Which is a bit hypocritical since all I ever hear is that to the left is "more open minded" and " accepting".
Here are a few stories from Hollywood Celebrities and that might change your mind.

Patricia Heaton-was having dinner and conversation with a few Hollywood friends when the subject of politics came up. When the "Everybody Loves Raymond" star said she's voting for George W. Bush, the chatter turned to awkward silence.
"You'd think I'd crapped in the middle of the table," the Emmy-winning actress says in "Rated R: Republicans in Hollywood," a documentary that premiered recently on AMC-TV.

Drew Carey-I honestly think that it automatically hurts me if I said that I supported the war in Iraq and I support the troops," says Drew Carey, who describes himself as a libertarian in the "Rated R" documentary. "That automatically kills me for getting a bunch of movies, a bunch of TV shows. People don't want to hear from me."

Mike DeLuca, a powerful producer at Sony Pictures Entertainment, told Details that when he acknowledged his Republican affiliation, the reaction in Hollywood was like admitting he was a "serial killer." DeLuca added that Tinseltown liberals "...scream about the environment before they hop onto their private jets and blow 8,000 pounds of fuel getting to the
Hamptons."

So much for being open minded. It's gotten to the point that several new outlets have tried to "out" celebrities for being Republican. Like its a bad thing. Some have banded togethor though to help support each other and protect from the onslaught. Here is link to an article that has more info on some of these Republicans, and here are a few links to a list of conservative celebrities. Just to name a few on the list:
Adam Sandler, Alan Jackson, Kirk Cameron, James Earl Jones, Denzel Washington (those 2 surprised me), Kelsey Grammer, etc...some of the people on this list I don't think are right. They also had Michael J Fox listed and we know how he blasted Bush on the whole stem cell thing. But at list it has a reference, and gives us Righties an opportunity to support those who are a little less on the left.

Heather Van Gogh?

Heather has been going to (Sip N Strokes) a studio with some friends and painting lately. At first I was like, eh..okay. You're going to drink and do paint by numbers. But I stand corrected. She did a pretty goood job on these. I like having some real paintings in the house. We are in dire need of decorating. So the more the merrier. Not exactly great picture taking by me, but you get the idea.

Just Fishin

I've never been much of a fisherman. Don't care for it all that much, but the boys are all in to it. Adam shocks me because he'll sit there for an hour without moving waiting to catch a fish. Jake on the other hand likes the idea of it, but after 20 minutes or so he's ready to do something else.

The sad thing is Jake's already caught 2 fish in the 2 times we've gone and Adam hasn't caught anything. Jake caught a bass on his very first cast within 15 seconds. Adam nothing. The second time around Jake catches a bream (brim?) on his 2nd cast. Adam nothing. Adam is not very happy about it either. he didn't stop fishing but put his head down and was griping about it.

McCain Camp Rescues Flags From Obama's Rally

Got this off of FOX NEWS. Goes to show how the Dems are when the cameraa aren't rolling.

Democrats are not caring for their Stars and Stripes. At least that’s the message out of John McCain’s campaign.

McCain supporters, claiming they rescued 12,000 miniature American flags from the site of Barack Obama’s nomination acceptance speech last Thursday, redistributed the orphan flags to audience members ahead of a McCain rally in Colorado Springs on Saturday.

The move was an overt swipe at Obama from a campaign whose motto has been “country first.” But Democratic convention organizers claimed the flags were not going to be discarded — but instead were snatched from the site of Obama’s historic address to carry out a “cheap political stunt.”

McCain supporters said the flags were discovered by a vendor at Denver’s Invesco Field after the conclusion of the Democratic National Convention. The vendor supposedly found trash bags full of flags in and near garbage bins, and turned them over to the McCain campaign.

Boy Scouts were sorting through 84 bags of flags in Colorado on Saturday, before a McCain supporter had veterans distribute them to the audience.

“We want to find good homes for these flags,” radio host Dan Caplis said at the rally, adding that whatever flags remained would be placed at memorials throughout Colorado.

Audience members, who booed when Caplis announced that the flags were left in Denver, waved the flags and chanted “U.S.A” before McCain arrived at the rally with his running mate, Sarah Palin.

Damon Jones, spokesman for the Democratic National Convention Committee, released a statement saying McCain should applaud the fact that thousands of American flags were “proudly waved” at their convention.

“But instead his supporters wrongfully took leftover bundles of our flags from the stadium to play out a cheap political stunt calling into question our patriotism,” he said.

Obama has faced attacks on his patriotism since the beginning of the Democratic primary race and has set up a Web site specifically designed to fight such charges.

The McCain campaign has denied questioning Obama’s patriotism, and even released a statement Friday calling Obama’s most recent comments on the matter “hysterical.”

Obama said Friday that Republicans are trying to make the election a personality contest, and that “what they’re really saying is ‘we’re going to try to scare people about Barack. So we’re going to say that you know, ‘Maybe he’s got Muslim connections or we’re going to say that, you know, he hangs out with radicals or he’s not patriotic.’”

U.S. Code says the proper method for disposing of an American flag is actually burning, provided it is “no longer a fitting emblem for display.”

The United States Flag Store, which sells full-sized and miniature flags, says on its Web site that flags can also be put in the trash, when they are “worn, damaged or tattered beyond repair.”

Politcs As Usual

I haven't had the time to get into it as much as I'd like, but I LOVE POLITICS. Heather's as bad as me. One of the few things we like to do together is watch Fox News and discuss candidates. We record the Republican Convention and watch it back. I've known all I thought I needed to know about John McCain for awhile, but after the convention I've got a new found respect for the man. I knew about his military career and political career and was impressed, but didn't care for some of his policies. At first I was like "eh", better than Obama. Now I think he truly is the "right" choice. First off I am card carrying member of the Alabama Republican Party and vote straight Republican. You can't convince me to vote Liberal...I mean Democrat..forget about it.
McCain is a tough man. All he went through as a POW and never would denounce his country. That alone is worth a vote or two. But if you look at his career, and the choices he's made. He never backs down, or changes his tune. What you see is what you get. Unlike Obama...who changes to whomever he's talking too. Facts are facts people.
Sara Palin was a GREAT choice. A strong woman of conviction and family. Good choice. Smart choice. She nailed Obama in her speech. Praphrase here in regards to her not being qualified.."I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a 'community organizer,' except that you have actual responsibilities"...NICE! Now the haters are coming out of the woodwork saying how can she raise children and be a VP. What happened to all the feminist on the Hillary Clinton bandwagon?! Ridiculous.
The other great speech of the night was Rudy Giuliani's. He was great. Laid it out plain and simple. Obama has no experience. I think he has approximately 143 days in office. Most of that time he didn't even vote. No experience as a leader at all. Not as a Mayor, Governor, Business, etc..nothing. Pretty much hasn't stuck with anything for long. What is a community organizer anyway?

Brokeback Deer Camp

Four guys were at deer camp. They had to bunk two to a room. No one
wanted to room with Daryl because he snored so badly. They decided it
wasn't
fair to make one of them stay with him the whole time, so they voted to
take turns. The first guy slept with Daryl and comes to breakfast the
next
morning with his hair a mess and his eyes all bloodshot. The other two
said, 'Man, what happened to you?' He said, 'Daryl snored so loudly, I
just sat up and watched him all night.'

The next night it was the second guy's turn. In the morning, same
thing--hair all standing up, eyes all bloodshot. The other two said,
'Man, what happened to you? You look awful!' He said, 'Man, that Daryl
shakes the roof. I sat up and watched him all night.'

The third night was Frank's turn. Frank was a big burly lumberjack; a
man's man. The next morning he came to breakfast bright eyed and bushy
tailed. 'Good morning,' he said. The other two couldn't believe it! He
looked rested and wide awake. They asked, 'Man, what happened?' He
said, "Well, we got ready for bed. I went and tucked Daryl into bed,
patted his butt and kissed him good night...Daryl sat up and watched me
all night."

9-year-old boy told he’s too good to pitch

Kind of lame story. Kid doesn't pitch that fast. That's just slightly above average for a kid that age. The average is around 30-35. Jake pitched in the 40mph range at 7 years old. So either they have a vendetta or they are WAY to protective of their babies...Personally I'd want my boys to play against the best the park has to offer.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP)—Nine-year-old Jericho Scott is a good baseball player— too good, it turns out.

The right-hander has a fastball that tops out at about 40 mph. He throws so hard that the Youth Baseball League of New Haven told his coach that the boy could not pitch any more. When Jericho took the mound anyway last week, the opposing team forfeited the game, packed its gear and left, his coach said.

Officials for the three-year-old league, which has eight teams and about 100 players, said they will disband Jericho’s team, redistributing its players among other squads, and offered to refund $50 sign-up fees to anyone who asks for it. They say Jericho’s coach, Wilfred Vidro, has resigned.

But Vidro says he didn’t quit and the team refuses to disband. Players and parents held a protest at the league’s field on Saturday urging the league to let Jericho pitch.

“He’s never hurt any one,” Vidro said. “He’s on target all the time. How can you punish a kid for being too good?”

The controversy bothers Jericho, who says he misses pitching.

“I feel sad,” he said. “I feel like it’s all my fault nobody could play.”

Jericho’s coach and parents say the boy is being unfairly targeted because he turned down an invitation to join the defending league champion, which is sponsored by an employer of one of the league’s administrators.

Jericho instead joined a team sponsored by Will Power Fitness. The team was 8-0 and on its way to the playoffs when Jericho was banned from pitching.

“I think it’s discouraging when you’re telling a 9-year-old you’re too good at something,” said his mother, Nicole Scott. “The whole objective in life is to find something you’re good at and stick with it. I’d rather he spend all his time on the baseball field than idolizing someone standing on the street corner.”

League attorney Peter Noble says the only factor in banning Jericho from the mound is his pitches are just too fast.

“He is a very skilled player, a very hard thrower,” Noble said. “There are a lot of beginners. This is not a high-powered league. This is a developmental league whose main purpose is to promote the sport.”

Noble acknowledged that Jericho had not beaned any batters in the co-ed league of 8- to 10-year-olds, but say parents expressed safety concerns.

“Facing that kind of speed” is frightening for beginning players, Noble said.

League officials say they first told Vidro that the boy could not pitch after a game on Aug. 13. Jericho played second base the next game on Aug. 16. But when he took the mound Wednesday, the other team walked off and a forfeit was called.

League officials say Jericho’s mother became irate, threatening them and vowing to get the league shut down.

“I have never seen behavior of a parent like the behavior Jericho’s mother exhibited Wednesday night,” Noble said.

Scott denies threatening any one, but said she did call the police.

League officials suggested that Jericho play other positions, or pitch against older players or in a different league.

Local attorney John Williams was planning to meet with Jericho’s parents Monday to discuss legal options.

“You don’t have to be learned in the law to know in your heart that it’s wrong,” he said. “Now you have to be punished because you excel at something?”

Addendum

Heather is as sweet and sexy as ever. She went to some place and painted a picture the other night with some friends. Looks good too. She is very pleased with herself.

Adam is still in 4k at Cedar Grove. Not happy about it either. His birthday is in December. Most of his friends moved up to the big school. Sandra McConathy is his teacher in the afternoons and she thinks he's as smart of all of them..ahem. Little pride there.

Of course he's upset that he doesn't have a dirt bike, but maybe Santa will bring him a 4 wheeler!

Quick Update

I've been too busy lately to post much, but I wanted to let everyone know what's going on with my Dad and the Davis family in general.
Dad is not doing well. He has lost most of his energy and can hardly move around. He has been using a cane for the last year or so, but he's been having to use a walker some lately. He just had his 63rd birthday, and all of his siblings and their spouses came over to see him. I think it lifted his spirits some. He still refuses to take any pain medicine. He wants to be aware of what's going on and may take some Tylenol from time to time, but that's it. Pray for him and Mom. For strength, faith, love, and peace. Financially as well.

Jake turned 9 on the 9th, and started 4th grade last week. We had a party for him at our house with friends and family. He surprised me by not asking for anything for his birthday. I finally asked him with a few days to go, and he said to surprise him. So we did. We got Jake a Honda XR80 (dirt bike). Completely caught him off guard. Now Adam is asking when he's going to get one!

I'll put up some pictures of Jake from All Stars later. We went to state, but didn't do too well. We still went to State though!

Thinking About Heather...

That last post got me thinking about Heather. She really surprises me. I know I like to (affectionately) call her Mary Poppins, but she really takes it to heart to raise men. For a girl that had sisters growing up she really wants to make sure the boys are treated like boys and they learn to be men. And I love her for that.
She's just as hard on the boys as I am. Ya'll think I'm competitive. I've learned to be less, because she is sooooo competitive. She hates to lose at ANYTHING! If Jake is slacking watch out Mommas gonna get on him. I give here a hard time for loving on Adam too much, but she really isn't that bad. She knows and doesn't treat him like a baby just because he's her youngest. She doesn't mind if I take them hunting. Well, with Adam hunting is walking in the woods. We're talking about getting the boys 4 wheelers (YES), and she's all for it. And possibly us?! Now that's my kind of woman. She's hot but tough, sexy but sweet, a loving Mother, but will whoop your tail if you get in trouble. She doesn't try and act like she's still a girl. She acts like a woman. That is sexy. She lets them get dirty and play hard, and doesn't worry about them getting hurt. If someone is picking on them instead of loving on them. She tells them to do what Daddy says. Which is, one puch to the nose as hard as you can. For those that don't know, that usually stops a bully from messing with you. Sorry, truth. This is obviously after you have warned him and told the teacher, and nothing has changed. ;-)
I guess my point is she wants the boys to be independent and she doesn't constantly shelter them. We are both on the same page (for the most part) when it comes to the boys and we want them to grow into men, and treat women with respect and that in itself is SEXY.

Ready For The Beach?

After we get through with this District Tournament we're heading to the beach. Normally we go for the whole week, but because of All Stars we're cutting it short. Figures we have several friends (Rance&Aimee, Rick&Rhonda, & somebody else I'm forgetting) that are all going to be coming down. As soon as we have to leave! I'm really sick of All Stars. Heather and Adam are leaving Saturday morning, while Jake and I stay for his game. Then we are leaving, unless we lose then we have to play on Sunday. Fun.
The worst part is I'll feel like I can't relax and I'll have to come back early to deal with Regionals (that start on July4th!). But you sign up for it so you've got to go at it full force. It's killing Heather. She's missing tonight's and tomorrow's game. She loves seeing her boys play ball. I missed some of his games last yr traveling for work, and it really bothered me. I know there will be a 100 more, but we hate to miss one.

Not How I Envisioned Spending Fathers Day!

It started off well. I slept late and the boys were excited about giving me their gifts. We ate breakfast, took showers, and left for the ball park. And that was the end of Fathers Day.
All Stars is killing me! We had to play 4 games yesterday. We won our first but lost our second and had to play our way out of the losers bracket. We lost to Hayden. Heather's step brother has a son on that team. So Jakes was excited about playing his sort of cousin. We played Springville and beat them, played Hayden again and won that time, and made it into the championship game. Unfortunately we had to play them twice. The first game we beat (Morris) them 20-3, but the second it went 8 innings and won by 1 point (14-13). It was tiring. Jake had a pretty good day. His batting was inconsistent, but his defense was great. He had 2 pop flys, but he threw 3 kids out from the fence to 3rd base. Never had a bounce, all were on a dime. So we won the championship. We celebrated for about 10 minutes, and then we all drug ourselves home to get some sleep.
Jake had an opportunity to win the game with a runner on 3rd, 2 outs, and him at bat. He had 2 great cuts on the ball but it was high, and on his next swing he hit a hard drive to the SS. The kid made a great play and got him out at 1st. We held them the next inning and Dutton Whitfield drove in the winning run. I found myself praying that Jake could have made that play to win the game. It was Fathers Day afterall. Then I felt so guilty. Why? Should I not pray for my son to win the game? I should be happy that he had a good game, and was happy that they won. But my pride got in the way. Later Heather told me when Jake got out and came over to the dug out she was talking to him thinking he was upset because he could have won it, and he had this goofy grin and said "Mom I think we're going to win". Now time has expired and we have to hold them to no runs, and he's happy thinking we have another chance. Don't we all wish we had that type of optimism? I'm all upset because "I" didn't have my son win it right there, and he's happy we still have a shot.
I need to pray for some of that optimism and less pride. Although, I'll still probably pray for prideful things I know God loves me no matter how selfish I am.

What Summer Vacation?

It's that time of year when the kids are out of school ready to have some fun and play and goof off and relax....until they choose All Stars. So Jake's summer vacation lasted about, oh 1 week. We've already started playing in one invitational tournament (odenville) and will finish it this weekend, and then we go to Pinson for their Invitational Tourney, which is always a good one. They usually have some of the top teams you'll face later (plus the great hospitality room).
Then the real fun starts we have district June 20th, from there (if we're one of the top 4) we go to the Area Tourney in Ft Payne (I think) which starts July 4th (which means I'll be coming home from our vacation a day early), and then if we place in the top 2 we go to state which is July 11th, and it's (for some reason) in Armore, TN. If you are really good you can make it to the World Series in Southaven, MS July 25th.
Long story short I'm proud of Jake for making All Stars again, but it's killing me. I'm tired from the practice and the games (I coach 3rd base), and lack of sleep. So, I know that poor kid is and it hasn't even started yet. But he's having fun, and learning that you have to step up your game if you want to be truly good at anything. Especially in a harder sport like baseball or football. It's just as much mental as physical.
Adam, (luckily) season is over and is happy doing his thing. He hasn't quite figured out why Jakes is still playing and he isn't. They actually do have All Star's but he's 4 playing in the 5 year old group. Plus he'd rather be at VBS. He's having so much fun at Cedar Grove that it's kind of hard to calm him down at night when he gets home. Heather's been taking him while I take Jake to practice.
Hopefully, we'll get our uniforms in this week for the tournament. Which leads me to another point. If anyone would like to help out our little All Star adventure please let me know. We are sending out letters to everyone we know asking for a SMALL donation. We have to raise around $5,000 and we are asking everyone we know to donate $10 . Jake and I both have to have uniforms that are going to run around $130+/- a piece. Plus the possible travel expenses. So please consider helping us out with a little cash....

Getting Plenty of Therapy

With all the rain I've been getting plenty of therapy. Better known as cutting the grass. It's very therapeutic. I get most of my serious thinking done riding the mower, weed eating, edging, and then blowing the yard. I just wish I was better at figuring out what the yard needs. I tried everything at our other house and the yard was okay. I though hey new yard new chance to make it right. I hate to admit it, but I even bought a Scotts Turf book. But it's still just okay. I've put out the fertilizer and treated the yard for weeds, but it still is just okay. I may eventually break down and pay turfbuilder or someone to come in and do it for me. But I'm cheap and I want to get it right myself. I want to be the "Hank Hill" of Moody (King of the Hill). And of course my neighbor spent a ton of money to have zoysia put in his front yard so I'm envious.

The back yard though is in serious need of help. They only sodded a small portion and the rest is rock and dirt. Well, they put out hay and said they seeded it, but I only see hay and mud. I'd love to have about 3 tandem loads of topsoil dumped and sod it, but that would cost way too much. So they boys can help me rake it by hand for the time being.
Just realized my finger was in the way...

Strength

I get caught up in showing strength a lot. Being a man and raising the boys to be men, and not little sissies. One of my Dad's hero's was John Wayne, and he wanted my brothers and I to act like men. Treat women with respect and stand up for what we believe in. But I'm more and more impressed with how much strength Heather has. We've had a fairly rough year. Between job changes, my Dad's health, and making less money than I was; things have been hard. Heather hasn't faltered a bit. She can see me getting stressed out and she somehow knows the right thing to say and do. She pulls strength form her faith, knowing God will provide. I wish I could be as strong as she is.
We started dating when she was 19, and I felt like I had to take care of her. For a long time I did, but somewhere along the line she started taking care of me. How'd that happen? I still feel the need though. Guess I always will. It's my job.
I don't usually show my feelings, but she knows what I'm thinking anyway. I'm thankful for that. Even if I don't always tell her.
I have a lot of people I consider friends, but I consider Rance and Josh 2 of my best. I can rely on them anytime. I've known them for a long time. I know Heather has a lot of friends, but I feel bad because she can't spend hardly any time with them. Most are doing homeschooling and spend most of their time together during the day and she has to work. I'm impressed with how much strength that takes. I know women need each other more than men do and it must be hard. I try to be there for here but I know it's not the same. I just hope I can give her the same strength she has given me.
I just thank God that the girl I started dating has turned into such a strong Godly woman (and mother).

Facing Reality

I wrote this last week, but haven't been able to post it until now. My family got bad news last Friday, but I haven't really said anything to anyone. I really haven't even talked to my Mom & Dad. Then I'd have to face it. My Dad's not responding to treatment, and his cancer has grown 35% since his last visit (3 weeks ago). It's in both lungs and a gland somewhere in his chest.
The Doctor told him to find a hospice provider and get things in order. It may be 2 wks it may be 2 months. You never know with these things, but it won't be long.
He just now told my Mom. She really didn't know how bad things were getting. He didn't want her to know. When things started to look really bad several months ago I was getting on him about getting things in order, and enjoying his time left. The only thing he wanted to do was work. I told him "you can't even drive right now. How are you going to operate a loader?" He looked at me and said, "I've been taking care of your mother for 41 years and I'll take care of her till I take my last breath". I said yes sir and took him to work. When you see a man as tough as that you think. Maybe with his strong faith in God and his toughness he can beat this. So it gives you a false sense of security.
I'm worried about my parents. My Dad is self employed. He's hardly worked over the last 2 years. This has pretty much bankrupted him. He came from a life without 401k's, and pension funds. It's whatever you can hold onto. My Mom has hardly ever worked, except raising 4 boys. My Dad has always taken care of her. We (my brothers and I) are probably going to have to pool our resources and bury him. My Mom won't be able to pay for her house and land. The reality of that scares me.
My parents are both Believers. My Dad has been convinced that God is going to give him 7 more years. My Mom has been living off of that. Believing that God wouldn't take him. I pray that they can put their faith in God to give them peace now. The reality is that we don't know what God has in store for us. We can't predict if we'll get more time or not.
My parents have never been the "grandparent" type. The grandparents that come over to take the kids for the weekend or take them some where fun. Some where deep down I kept hoping that one day my Dad would wake up and do that for the boys, but the reality is it's not in him. I know he loves them. I just pray he can show them before it's too late.
Please pray for my family. For peace, strength, and wisdom. That my brothers don't blame God. That my Mother gets the strength she needs. Pray that financially we can do what needs to be done. Pray for me. I've been blocking it as much as I can, but when I have to face reality pray that God gives me strength.

"Hokey Pokey" Songwriter Dead @ 93

With all the sadness and trauma going on in the world at themoment, it is worth reflecting on the death of a very important person, which almost went unnoticed last week.Larry LaPrise, the man who wrote "The Hokey Pokey," died peacefully at age93. The most traumatic part for his family was getting him into thecoffin. They put his left leg in.
And then the trouble started.

Ever Wonder Why Men Like Women Who Wear Leather?

When a woman wears a leather dress

A man's heart beats quicker,

He goes weak in the knees,

And he begins to think irrationally.

Ever wonder why?

Because she smells like a new truck.

Do We Trust in God with Our Children?

Many of you know about last weeks terrible accident on I-459. If not here's the link. It was a terrible accident. Unfortunately I drove by on 459 N in the far left lane shortly after they had taken the bodies, and it was something I wish I hadn't seen.
I've read many posts on al.com and heard several people say that we should change the driving age on interstates (although the boy driving was 18). Also, there were several comments made about younger children in the car, and how to change or stop it from happening.
The simple answer is you can't. You can control some situations, but you aren't always going to be there. It got me thinking about how as parents we always try to control ever aspect of our children's lives. Heather and I try and steer Jake and Adam towards certain opportunities and away from others the best we can. We mainly hope and pray that they have learned enough from us and that God will guide them. But we still jump in!
We all try and control our children. From who their friends are to where they go to what they wear. It's human nature, and I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with that. But where is the TRUST IN GOD? We can try to control our children's friends, but they'll resent it and eventually do what they want and hopefully learn from it. I did. There will always be someone in their life that they shouldn't be hanging around and they'll know they need to distance themselves from that person. If we raise them with good moral values according to the law and TRUST IN GOD.
We can try and control who our children date, but has that EVER worked? No...I remember my parents telling my older brother he couldn't go out with this girl in high school because they thought she was a bad influence (not sure who the bad influence was there-him or her). Well, he snuck(sp?) out of the house after everyone had fallen asleep. Then Dad got a call from the police that he had wrecked his car, oh around 1:30 in the morning. How well did that work? Dad wound up nailing his window shut after the 3rd time. Now, I know I'll try and do the same thing, but at some point I've got to TRUST IN GOD.
We an try and control how our children approach things or feel about church, but that doesn't always work. I know my parents did, and at first I liked going to church. Until I got older. Then that was the last place I wanted to be. Jake doesn't want to be at church now. Do I feel like he's somehow disappointed me? No, he's 8 and is bored out of his mind (no offense Burt). He can't comprehend the message Burt is giving. I wish he had a children's class to go to but he doesn't. So what do I do? TRUST IN GOD. I pray that Jake eventually understands in time, and Heather and I keep plugging away.
It seems as though we all try to control things with our children, but we can't. As soon as we do we've already lost the battle. God should be sufficient in our everyday lives. From who our children date to who they play with to whatever they do in life. Our job is to guide them and be a moral compass. Help them learn the law and to TRUST IN GOD. If we don't are we saying God isn't sufficient?

First Day Of Spring! & I'm Ready...

I'm ready to get out and hit a honky tonk...get out and have a good time have a few drinks, throw some darts, do a little dancing, (maybe a little fightin..) just kidding..too old for that. Unfortunately, I don't think Heather *aka Mary Poppins* would got for that. I need to get a little rowdy every once in a while. The warm weather's getting me going, man. I want to hit Inisfree Pub or Zydecos's. My birhtday is in May sounds like as good a reason as any other to get out.
I need to enlist some people to help me talk her into it..any volunteers?

Pre-Season Baseball Tourney

If you didn't notice the Davis family didn't make it to church on Sunday. We've been at the park ALL weekend. The Youth Association decided to have a preseason tournament and both the boys played. Adam's 5 year old Tball team made it in to the championship game, but unfortunately lost. But the got a cool medal that he is SO proud of. Jake's team hadn't lost a game until last night. They're now in the losers bracket. If they win they're in the championship. If they lose they're done.
Both boys played pretty well. Rance and I are coaching the t ball team together. Adam wants the ball all the time. The problem is he wants to go to first most of the time. All in all for a 4 yr old he played well. Briley did pretty good too. We moved them both up so for their age the both hit well and stopped some balls.
I didn't get to see most of Jake's games, just last nights. I had a couple of people come up and tell me that he was having a great tourney. He was killing it. He almost had a couple go over the fence and had several good catches. Last night he turned a beautiful double play, but the other boy couldn't quite hang on to the ball. What I'm most proud of is that he's learning from his mistakes, and acting like a coach on the field and talking to the other players.
All for now. I'll post pics after it's over.

UPDATE-Jake's team won so they're now in the PreSeason Championship game. Unfortunately it's a double elimination.

Soap Box Time-One of my many pet peeves

I don't get "cyclist"...I was on my way home and there was a wreck on 459 so I got off and came down 78 into Leeds. And there are 2 cyclists taking up both lanes. In a 60 mph zone. So I don't get too close and tap the horn to let them know I'm behind them. Now, at this point you'd think they'd get out of the way, but nooo. Sissy boys give me the finger and stay there. Now a bike might be doing 30 down hill. But come one!. I know you're suppose to share the road or whatever but you can't act like you're a freakin CAR! Get the heck out of the way! Then an 18 wheelers comes down the hill and jake brakes it and lays on his horn... he about killed himself getting over. I laugh as I drive by the Lance Armstrong wannabe. I mean what self respecting man wears sissy boy spandex anyway? And don't forget they have their little jerseys like they're really in the Tour de France. Loser.
Anyway, I can't stand the cycle people. Mainly because they won't yield to traffic and think they have as much right as a car...I think not. When you can peddle that thing 55mph, THEN you are on equal play field.

Do a real sport...that doesn't include spandex

C'mon Spring!

I'm tired..actually the Davis' family is tired. We've been hitting the ball field with both the boys in tow practicing (too much in my opinion), until 8 and sometimes later 4 times a week. But it's a prelude to something better. SPRING! I'm ready for it and here is why:
  • Warmer weather...I like it warm. I feel better when it's warm.
  • Baseball..as much as it is a pain sometimes I love watching the boys play. It's one of life's treasures to see your children obtain a goal (hitting a home run or catching their first pop fly).
  • Cutting the grass...it's therapeutic (I'll post more on this later)
  • Going to the hunting club and watching the wildlife..gonna be great if we can find the time
  • Spring football...A Day at AU...hopefully we can make it this year. Didn't make it last year
  • March Madness...the only time I'll watch basketball. And of course filling out my bracket
  • College baseball..I'm not much of a MLB fan but I love to watch SEC baseball (or any college b'ball for that matter)
  • Longer days...time change ..

An Irishman Walks Into A Bar...

An Irishman walks into a bar in Dublin, orders three pints of Guinness and sits in the back of the room, drinking a sip out of each one in turn. When he finishes them, he comes back to the bar and orders three more. The bartender approaches and tells him, "You know, a pint goes flat after I draw it; it would taste better if you bought one at a time."The Irishman replies, "Well, you see, I have two brothers. One is in America, the other in Australia, and I'm here in Dublin. When we all left home, we promised that we'd drink this way to remember the days when we drank together. So I drinks one for each o' me brothers and one for me self."The bartender admits that this is a nice custom, and leaves it there. The Irishman becomes a regular in the bar, and always drinks the same way: He orders three pints and drinks them in turn. One day, he comes in and orders two pints. All the other regulars take notice and fall silent. When he comes back to the bar for the second round, the bartender says, "I don't want to intrude on your grief, but I wanted to offer my condolences on your great loss."The Irishman looks quite puzzled for a moment, then a light dawns in his eye and he laughs. "Oh, no, everybody's just fine," He explains, "It's just that me wife had us join that Baptist Church and I had to quit drinking. 'Hasn't affected me brothers a bit though

Chuck Norris Takes On Oprah's "New Easter"

It seems as though every time we turn around another celebrity is jumping into the political world. As if that wasn't bad enough now we have them jumping into the religious world. With celebrities like Tom Cruise trying to sell everyone on Scientology.

Now the 'cream of the crop" Oprah has teamed up with an author Eckhart Tolle in her book club.

"Today, a live ten-week webinar hosted by Oprah Winfrey and Eckhart Tolle, author of "A New Earth," will begin on the Internet. Both the book and the online course purport to be able to awaken you and our world to life's grand purpose.
Since Oprah's endorsement of Tolle's book a month ago,
3.5 million copies of his spiritual self-help guide have been sent out to enlighten the minds of people around the globe. And more than 500,000 people in 125 countries have already signed up for the worldwide web seminar."

"Tolle advocates that the chief obstacle to awakening is our ego, and that fear is the basis of ego. (Is that a revelation to anyone?) The Bible declared more than two millennia ago, "With pride comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom" and "perfect love drives out all fear."

Just another way for man to find salvation without Christ. Is it any coincidence that this happens during Lent? Read Chucks commentary on this to find out more about this "new Easter".

Couple of Quick Hits

Pray for our family as we have been hit with the flu bug. Adam was really bad this weekend, but he's back on his feet. Heather has been achy but back at work. I've been okay just tired and achy, but not bad. Luckily Jake hasn't been phased by it. We all started taking Tamaflu after Adam got it and we think it probably helped.

I wanted to thank all the guys that came to the house this weekend. For everyone that couldn't make it you missed a great time, but don't worry we plan on doing these every couple of months. We had a couple of my neighbors and friends that some guys brought with them. Hopefully we can get some more guys that aren't involved with a church to the next one. The men in our church need more opportunities to socialize, and meet some new people. Hopefully we can take from this and get together more often.

I wanted to THANK everyone for the donations for Rays this weekend it was truly a help for their family. Please remember that this will be a continuous situation for at least 6-7 weeks. They will need meals and money(gift cards) for awhile. Either make a donation during the offering or I can get it to Keith and Rebbeca. Continue praying for strength and faith for their family.

Meeting Rich Franklin-UFC 3X Middleweight Champ(former)

Here are a couple of pics of me and Heather(mainly Heather) with Rich Franklin from the UFC. He's a top ranked Mixed Martial Arts fighter. We got to go to specail meet and greet with a few other people. Seemed like a great guy. Although, he kept calling Heather out of the crowd, and got several more pictures with her. All I got was a polaroid. Even when another lady was getting her picture taken he called out to Heather (by name) and started talking to her again. HMMMM....I told her she should have asked for tickets since he was so "friendly" with her!

Meals For The Ray's

The Ray's are doing fine this morning (including Johnathon). Our Community Group has just grown by one more and he is a fighter. Heather is taking care of the meals for the Rays so if you would like to prepare a meal call the house (640-7594). If we're not at home leave a message and we'll get back to you. Since they (the Ray's) will be spending alot of time at the hospital. We'd also like to ask for a monetary donation or gift cards for restaurants in the area near the hospital. If you haven't seen it yet Keith set up a blog for updates on Johnathon.

Continue to pray for strength and faith for the family. the fight has just begun.

The Start of Baseball

This is an older pic of the boys, but I like it.

It's that time of year. Little League will start soon, and we'll be spending more time at the park than usual. Adam will be playing T ball. He played capball last year, but that's a little different.
I was a little worried at first about spending equal time with Jake & Adam, since it's just been Jake all this time. I was planning on Head coaching Jake and assisting Adam's team (Rance will be Head). That is until I got, oh how shall we say it...blackballed. I didn't get a 7/8 year old team. I have been coaching at Moody for 5 years. I've coached Fall Ball, helped at camps, and been there at the work days. All to no avail. I had a few board members no vote me due to the fact I coached in Leeds last year.Of course they said that wasn't the reason, but one told me that's the excuse used. That my friends is little league baseball.
On the brightside I can work more one on one with Jake and give Adam equal time. If I step back and look at the big picture. God has answered a prayer. He has given me what I asked for. Just in a way I didn't expect or really want. Isn't that normal though? Like a child asking for a snack and getting banana instead of a pack of gummis. It's what you ask for but not what you asked for. It will be interesting to see what is in store for us and why God has chagned "our" plans so to speak.

Don't Feed The Pigeons

St Peter & THe Pearly Gates

A man appeared before St. Peter at the Pearly Gates."Have you ever done anything of particular merit?" St.Peter asked."Well, I can think of one thing," the man offered."On a trip to the Black Hills of South Dakota, I came upon a gang of bikers who were threatening a young woman.I directed them to leave her alone, but they wouldn't listen. So, I approached the largest and most heavily tattooed biker and smacked him in the face, kicked his bike over, ripped out his nose ring, and threw it on the ground. I yelled, "Now, back off, or I'll kick the SH*T out of all of you!"St. Peter was impressed .. "When did this happen?"" Couple of minutes ago."

My Valentine-Why I Love My WIfe!

Wish I could have gotten this started sooner, but it still counts!

  • Although I'm not morning person, She wakes up every morning even more beautiful and energetic as she was when she was the day before.

  • She always seems to "not" get frustrated byt the constant questions from the boys.

  • She always looks amazing, even in pajamas..except for those flannels ones..just kidding

  • She works 40 hours a week and still keeps the house clean, cooks dinner, washes clothes, helps Jake with his homework, and finds time for me.
  • She never complains about it or procrastinate about the daily duties around the house, even though she's working and not at home.

  • Here's to a working Mom that can get all the "daily" stuff done and work. I'm not into time management so she has to be.

  • She always knows what's going on with the boys and their schools, and who the kids are they play with.....HOW?

  • She has a way of pointing out my (very few) mistakes without be patronizing.

  • She exercises all the time to "get into" shape, when I thought she already was!

  • Manages to constantly look for opportunities to point out to talk to the boys about Christ in situations I never would have thought of.

  • She's an organizer. Everything is planned to the last detail. All I have to know is what to where.

  • She still looks like that 19 year old girl that I fell in love with.

  • She tries to reach out to most people at church even though I (like most) fall into a group and stay there.

  • She puts up with me and my warped sense of humor.

Spoiled Under 30 Crowd!!

SPOILED UNDER-30 CROWD!!! If you are 30 or older you will think this is hilarious!!!!

When I was a kid, adults used to bore me to tears with their tedious diatribes about how hard things were when they were growing up; what with walking twenty-five miles to school every morning .. uphill BOTH ways, yadda, yadda, yadda. And I remember promising myself that when I grew up, there was no way I was going to lay a bunch of crap like that on kids about how hard I had it and how easy they've got it!

But now that... I'm over the ripe old age of thirty, I can't help but look around and notice the youth of today. You've got it so easy! I mean, compared to my childhood, you live in a dang Utopia! And I hate to say it but you kids today you don't know how good you've got it!

I mean, when I was a kid we didn't have The Internet . If we wanted to know something, we had to go to the library and look it up ourselves, in the card catalog!! There was no email!! We had to actually write somebody a letter ..with a pen! Then you had to walk all the way across the street and put it in the mailbox and it would take like a week to get there!

There were no MP3's or Napsters! You wanted to steal music, you had to > hitchhike to the record store and shoplift it yourself! Or you had to wait around all day to tape it off the radio and the DJ'd usually talk over the beginning and mess it all up!

We didn't have fancy crap like Call Waiting! If you were on the phone and somebody else called they got a busy signal, that's it! And we didn't have fancy Caller ID Boxes either! When the phone rang, you had no idea who it was! It could be your school, your mom, your boss, your bookie, your drug dealer, a collections agent, you just didn't know!!! You had to pick it up and take your chances, mister!

We didn't have any fancy Sony Playstation video games with high-resolution 3-D graphics! We had the Atari 2600! With games like "Space Invaders" and "asteroids". Your guy was a little square! You actually had to use your imagination! And there were no multiple levels or screens, it was just one screen forever! And you could never win. The game just kept getting harder and harder and faster and faster until you died! Just like LIFE!

When you went to the movie theater there no such thing as stadium seating!
All the seats were the same height! If a tall guy or some old broad with a hat sat in front of you and you couldn't see, you were just screwed!

Sure, we had cable television, but back then that was only like 15 channels and there was no on screen menu and no remote control! You had to use a little book called a TV Guide to find out what was on! You were screwed when it came to channel surfing! You had to get off your butt and walk over to the TV to change the channel and there was no Cartoon Network either! You could only get cartoons on Saturday Morning. Do you hear what I'm saying!?! We had to wait ALL WEEK for cartoons, you spoiled little jerks!

And we didn't have microwaves, if we wanted to heat something up we had to use the stove or go build a frigging fire ... imagine that! If we wanted popcorn, we had to use that stupid Jiffy Pop thing and shake it over the stove> forever like an idiot. That's exactly what I'm talking about! Yo u kids today have got it too easy. You're spoiled. You guys wouldn't have lasted five minutes back in 1980!

Things I Want To Accomplish

I've been doing some thinking lately and there are a couple of things I regret not finishing. I'd like to do. Some I will some I won't some are a dream.
  • Finish me degree. I was going to school at night to finish before I started traveling for work and put it on the back burner. Now I just can't afford it. I'm a Sr though and still enrolled at UAB, so I will finish. I may be 40 but I'll get it done.
  • Get my Black Belt. I was so close (several yrs ago). I was testing for it the next time, and then got 2 ribs cracked in a fight and stopped for awhile. Then got married and it slowly faded away.
  • Kill a trophy buck. I love to hunt, but that trophy has eledued me for years. One day he's gonna step out in front of me and I won't hesitate.
  • Go to all the SEC stadiums and watch AU play. I think that would be so cool to hit all those different stadiums.
  • Go to Wichita and watch the College World Series. That would be cool.
  • Travel to Eurpoe. I've been to Germany, Austria, Lichtenstein, Swtzerland, and stopped in the Nederlands on aour way home. I'd love to go back with Heather.

A Puppy Story....

A man was leaving a convenience store with his morning coffee when he noticed a most unusual funeral procession approaching the nearbycemetery.A long black hearse was followed by a second long blackhearse about 50 feet behind the first one. Behind the secondhearse was a solitary man walking a pit bull on a leash.Behind him, a short distance back, were about 200 men walking single file. The man couldn't stand his curiosity. He respectfully approached the man walking the dog and said, 'I am so sorryfor your loss', I know now is a bad time to disturb you, but I've never seen a funeral like this. Whose funeral is it?' 'My wife's'' What happened to her?' The man replied, 'My dog attacked and killed her.'He inquired further, 'Well, who is in the second hearse?'The man answered, 'My mother-in-law. She was trying to help my wife and the dog turned on her.'A poignant and thoughtful moment of silence passed between the two men.

'Can I borrow the dog?''Get in line.'
It's Just A Joke, ladies...Love ya Heather!

He's also a believer and uses this platform to share the gospel. Heather's a HUGE fan. He's cute... He was doing a book signing on his new book, "Made In America". Adam wasn't happy though. Who Wants The Job?

Who among us wants the job of Elder? Not me. I couldn't imagine the struggle, pain, and grace they have shown through the last few weeks. Of course the pure sanctity of Christ in the end of this ordeal was a blessing.

As we (the Deacons) sat down for our meeting a couple of weeks ago and were told of the recent events I think I went through every emotion you can imagine in about 20 seconds, as I'm sure most of you did. Then I felt shame shame for myself for not noticing a family members pain. Then I heard of Jack Sullivan's statement to Hope during their meeting with the elders, "we failed you." Can you imagine the strength and love?

As we go through this we need to keep things in perspective. We need to look at our Elders for guidance and not second guess their actions. I'm a critical person (a shock I know!). I usually say what I think and try and convince you how right I am! It's not my best trait. At first I thought of a hand full of things "I would" have done differently if I had to address the Church, and then I thought. "Are you crazy!" Standing in front of the congregation with all of the emotions that had to be going through their minds. I'm amazed at how well Mr. Brumblow handled it and how articulate he spoke. God was truly in his heart. Jesse spoke from wisdom and it put my mind at ease. Do I agree with everything the ruling body does? No, but that's okay. We can't agree with everyone all the time, but we can submit. I found myself a few years ago questioning things about our church and wanting to know how things were done. It's okay to ask questins, how else will we learn anything, but instead of sitting around complaining about it I got involved. I worked with the Deacons and helped the youth group. Then God taught me a lesson and I was appointed a Deacon. Now I realize I should have kept my mouth shut! Seriously though it is a blessing, but you have to be ready for it.

As we meet in our small groups, meet for lunches, or whatever ideas will come to our minds. Without going into too much detail everyone can imagine or has heard certain questions that have arisen. From the dollar amount, to who has access to the accounts, but keep one thing in mind. If you have a question ask an officer. As you start to question the Elders in their decision remember "WE" elected them to their office. They were chosen by God. Also, look to The Book Of Church Order . In Chapter 27, it states: As there were in the Church under the law, elders of the people for the government therof, so in the Gospel Church, Christ has furnished others besides ministers of the Word with gifts and commission to govern when called thereunto, who are called ruling elders.

So as we go though the rest of our week and reflect pray for our church leaders (and Hope) and ask yourself, "Who Wants The Job?"
